ONSENSOU is a scalp and hair care brand by VELAS Corporation Ltd., born in Beppu, Oita Prefecture — Japan's foremost hot spring destination. Every product is built around Onsen Algae Extract, a proprietary ingredient drawn from algae living in the hot spring sources of Beppu. The range covers shampoo, treatment, hair mask, body care and hand care, with scalp care at its centre.
Launched in 2019, ONSENSOU is now sold in more than 20 countries and regions, including Japan, China, the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, Chile and the EU. The scalp care shampoo at the heart of the range has sold more than 3 million units since launch.

ONSENSOU began with a simple question: why does bathing in a hot spring leave skin feeling better? The president of VELAS Corporation Ltd. — qualified as a Cosmetic Concierge, Hair Diagnostician and Onsen Sommelier — kept hearing the same wish from people: that the benefit of a hot spring could be part of an ordinary busy day, at home. Working with a hot spring microbiology research institute in Beppu, VELAS turned that wish into onsen algae care — products that bring the gift of the springs into an everyday routine.
The design takes its cues from hot springs and from Beppu itself — a deliberately simple form, meant to evoke wabi-sabi, the aesthetic sensibility at the heart of Japanese culture. Nothing shouts. The products are made to stand quietly and keep you company through the ordinary hours of the day. That is what ONSENSOU believes a product should be.

Two ingredients drawn from the springs
Onsen Algae Extract — keeps the scalp healthy
Onsen Algae Extract is ONSENSOU's proprietary beauty ingredient, drawn from algae that live in the hot spring sources of Beppu. It comes from a remarkably resilient alga, able to survive in spring water approaching 90°C. In an ONSENSOU formula, its role is that of a skin conditioning ingredient — helping bring out the scalp's health and keep the skin there in good condition, season after season.
Discovered among more than 200 microorganisms found in Beppu's springs and named "onsen algae." On cosmetic ingredient lists it appears as green algae extract.
Onsen Yeast Extract — brings moisture to the scalp
Paired with Onsen Algae Extract is Onsen Yeast Extract (hydrolyzed yeast extract), also derived from Beppu's hot springs. It brings moisture to skin that tends towards dryness, and helps hold it there — keeping the scalp comfortable after cleansing.

Cleanse
A mild cleansing design, formulated without soap-based cleansing agents, lifts away dirt and excess sebum to keep the scalp clean, without stripping the moisture your skin needs. A gentler Mild version is also available.
Moisturize
Onsen Yeast Extract brings moisture to the skin after cleansing and helps hold it, so the scalp stays comfortable well past the wash.
Condition
Onsen Algae Extract works as a skin conditioning ingredient, helping keep an easily unsettled scalp healthy. When the skin is in good condition, hair follows — with body, resilience and movement.
